On May 27, vocalist Sakai Izumi of the popular Japanese group "Zard" has passed away after head injuries from falling down a flight of stairs at the age of 40. The private funeral service solemnly took place on May 30, at Tokyo Machida City Funeral Hall. There were approximately 20 close relatives attending.
About 50 members of the press corps gathered at the front of the Funeral Hall as well as 30 fans to pay their respects to the songstress. White and pink flowers accompanied the white casket. Sakai's father, serving as the chief mourner, held the mortuary tablet and her mother embraced the iei (Japanese portrait of a deceased person).
The fans watched the funeral procession in succession. A 29-year-old woman from Hiroshima who took the day off work to attend said she was always inspired by Sakai's music. A 25-year-old housewife from Ishikawa city, Chiba became a fan when she listened to the song "Makenaide" at first and said she now only has to remember.
In Buddhist tradition, it's customary to give a deceased person a kaimyou (posthumous name). Sakai's kaimyou is Choukyou Kouki-Shin'nyo, which means "lucid sound joy shine woman of honor." Female fans loudly wailed, "Izumi-chan, arigatou!!" to the hearse going to the crematorium as attendants cried.
Another memorial procession for Sakai will take place at a funeral service in Aoyama, Tokyo on June 27.
