Kat-Tun tops Oricon’s 2006 Hit ChartJanuary 1, 2007 by Joseph Ward (AudioAsia) Kat-Tun's debut song "Real Face" was the biggest hit single in Japan in 2006 with 1,038,923 copies sold, the only single to reach the coveted million seller mark that year. The six member band's talent followed them with their second work "Signal," selling 566,719 copies, coming in at #5 for the whole year, an unprecendented achievement of hits released in succession. Kat-Tun is a newcomer who is excelling in every aspect. Second in ranking was "Koyuki" by Remioromen, which was used in the TV drama "1 Rittoru no namida" (One Little Tear), which was played at the story's climax, when the audience was deeply moved at the end of the drama. Coming in third on the single chart is "Seishun Amigo" by Shuuji to Akira. Seen as an explosive hit, "Seishun Amigo" has a nostalgic air in its lyrics and melody. However, its inclusion on the 2006 charts was disputed by J-pop fans because it was released on November 2, 2005, and became a long-selling hit. On the album charts, "Ken Hirai 10th Anniversary Complete Single Collection '95-'05 'Uta Baka'" topped the list as the only two million seller. Hirai achieved 1st place in the singles chart in 2004 with the single "Hitomi wo Tojite" (Close your eyes), so he has dominated both the single and album charts. Kumi Koda's "Best~Second Session~" made the #2 spot, selling an unprecented 1,768,628 records, and it stayed in the top ten for 12 weeks. Oricon doesn't seem to be surprised at the success of Koda. Finally, the third best selling album of 2006 was "All Singles Best" by Kobukuro, which is comprised of members Shunsuke Kurota and Kentaro Obuchi.
